Feature Article

Soothsayers are people who try to predict the future. They are out there wearing different hats. Fortune tellers and economists. Weatherman and Wall Street.

The ones who tick me off the most are those making outlandish predictions just to get noticed and hawk their book.

Going into this year, soothsayer predictions abounded.

Interest rates: Predictions galore on this one! The overwhelming majority of soothsayers predicted several interest rate increases in 2016 as they (wrongly) thought our economy was getting strong. In reality, our economic progress is limping along taking three steps forward and one step back. We are not firing on all cylinders yet. With global recession, it is hard to make a strong case for a series of interest rate hikes in the near term.

Bond market: For some soothsayers, there was a fear that a strong economic recovery and rising interest rates would kill bond returns. In reality, 2016 bond returns are doing quite well. Some bond returns are higher than stocks so far this year.

Economy: Still other soothsayers predicted a fall back into recession. In reality, the FOMC would not be chatting about a future interest rate hike but rather an interest rate decrease if they feared a recession.

Stock market: Predictions abounded going into this year. I recall some soothsayers saying to expect zero percent return on stocks. They said the concern is not a returnon your money but a return of your money invested in the stock market. In reality, stocks are doing well with major US indexes returning around 8% thus far.

No one knows what will happen in the short term, regardless of their credentials, awards, Ivy league school diploma, and authoring a book.

Week In Review With Commentary

Last week the US Gross Domestic Product showed relatively weak numbers. This week, is another story as US companies added 250,000 jobs recent; far above the 180,000 expected. It shows how this economic recovery is uneven. We are moving forward, but not firing on all cylinders quite yet. US wages increased. The official unemployment is around 5%.

Markets In Review With Commentary

US stocks are getting more expensive as corporate revenues and earnings are not growing much, with exceptions. P/E ratios are inching up. Yet, the stock market continues climbing upward since there are not many other strong alternatives. Look at the low yields on savings accounts, checking accounts, CD's, money market accounts, and short term US treasury bonds. I don't anticipate that these returns will return to more normal levels for years.  So far, returns on stocks have favorably surprised me. We have less than five months remaining in the year. With this Presidential election, anything can happen.

Mecca Moment

If you follow the crowd, at best expect mediocre results.

Do not do something just because others are doing it; especially when it comes to your family's future financial security.
